Screenwriter and producer Rebecca Robinson is announcing the launch of the “Piercing Time” podcast. A period drama, Piercing Time is the first in a series of stories about remarkable women of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. New episodes are being released this week across all major streaming platforms. Listeners can follow the program on Twitter @piercingtm1006, and on social media using #piercingtimepodcast, #metooin1066, and #speaktruthtopower.
The 10-part historical drama, based on the Bassett family in England nearly 1,000 years ago, is both political thriller and love story. It follows the life of Cynewyn of Drayton, a Saxon/Mercian heiress from a long line of powerful landowners who falls on hard times after the Normans take away her land and very nearly, her life.
Winding through the story are falconers, priests, jongleurs, seamstresses, kings, queens, and exotic Turkish guardsmen. Cynewyn’s fate is intimately tied to the creation of the Bayeux Tapestry, an artifact of crowning genius that may or may not have been a tool of propaganda for the Saxon cause.
Robinson says this original work is based on factual history and the story of her own family. “My mother’s family name is Basset, my great grandfather wrote a book about our ancestors Isabelle, Thurstan, and Ralph,” she says, “The real history was so fantastic and enthralling that I decided to write a screenplay.”
Originally intended as a film, Piercing Time was supposed to be pitched to producers in London this Spring. However, when the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic delayed those plans, it was suggested that Robinson transform the story into a podcast.
Robinson adds that even though this is a historical piece, it’s very much a story for today’s times. “It’s about speaking truth to power,” she says, “It’s like the Me Too Movement of the 11th century. These women are remarkable and inspirational.”
All the actors donated their time and talent. Grammy-nominated composer Kna–Lo Venge, well-known in the industry as a musical innovator, composed the original music and produced the sound effects. Piercing Time is his first foray into movie and podcast music.
