The Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska is proud to announce their recent award of $876,206 under the Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation (CTAS), which is implemented through the Department of Justice Tribal Justice and Safety program. This year the tribe partnered with Native American Family Services (NAFS) to apply for funding to bring two new programs to the reservation.
Under Purpose Area #3, Justice Systems and Alcohol and Substance Abuse, which is facilitated through the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), the tribe received $426,465 to develop and implement strategies to reduce alcohol and drug (including methamphetamine) related crimes, traffic fatalities and injuries and to provide treatment services while collaborating efforts with local, state and tribal agencies, social services and supportive programs in order to bring wellness and healing to the tribal community. The Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska plans, with their collaborative partner, the Iowa Tribal Court/Justice system to respond to and prevent alcohol and substance abuse related crimes using a coordinated, and community based approach.
Under Purpose Area #5, Violence against Women Tribal Governments Program, which is facilitated through the Office of Violence against Women, the tribe received $ 449,741 to develop a plan to increase coordination that will yield a Crimes against Women delivery system that will add to and enhance current services for every woman who is a victim of crime. In addition, the tribe plans to increase direct community service delivery system to provide appropriate advocacy and counseling services for crimes against women on the reservation and provide measurable outcomes to continue the success of the program. And lastly, they will develop a plan to create educational prevention campaigns for domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and to increase community awareness about the needs of children who have witnessed domestic violence.
Under a memorandum of understanding, the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska contracted with Morning Star Consulting, a Native American owned grant consulting firm, to facilitate the application process.
